Preparations for a very uncertain future. . .

Things are coming to a head in Connecticut.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting, the state of Connecticut has passed ill-advised, knee-jerk, legislation forcing the registration of the usual suspects of the gun-grabbers – high capacity magazines and ‘assault rifles’.  No, not the registration of NEW purchases of these items – the registration of ALL such items legally purchased and owned by CT citizens.  The citizens had a few months to comply with the states’ demand that they come forth and register them at designated locations across the state.  And, indeed some did.  But, therein lies the problem.  Out of an estimated 350,000 owners of the now illegal weapons and magazines, only a few thousand actually came forward to submit to the tyranny of the state.  This instantly created several hundred thousand new ‘felons’ across the Nutmeg State who refused to comply with the order.

The new felons have recently been issued a second letter stating that they are in violation of the law, but just how far will the gun-grabbers in the State House go to enforce the law against 300,000 or so heavily armed, 2nd amendment supporters is the 64 thousand dollar question.  This situation warrants your close attention.  Things could get very ugly in CT and spread rapidly if cooler heads do not prevail. ‘Conservative Enemies of the State’

I was recently perusing my favorite internet sites when I came across a link to the above titled article on the FrontPageMag website.  From openly courting Muslim recruits, to chaplains getting the OK to perform Gay marriages, to women soon being allowed in ALL combat roles, to calling the Fort Hood massacre by an islamist terrorist ‘work place violence’, the US military has certainly undergone a ‘Fundamental Transformation’ (hey, where have I heard that phrase before………) in that past 5 years.  And that transformation is continuing unabated.

This short article has more information on a theme I have proffered often here on this blog – that being that YOU, not some bogey-man AL-Qaeda terrorist, is in the cross-hairs of the DHS and the rest of the Fed alphabet soup.  YOU, the conservative, gun-loving, liberty-loving, limited government wanting, God-loving, Gadsden Flag waving, preppers are now classified as being members of ‘Neo-Confederate’ hate groups and must be closely scrutinized.

Don’t believe me?  Read the article.

Kel-Tec Sub 2000 Project Complete!

A few posts back, I posted a picture of my Kel-Tec Sub-2000 carbine and extolled its virtues as a ‘trunk gun’.  Well, it’s an even better trunk gun now.

keltec1

Voila!  Gone is the boxy stock plastic fore-end and goofy plastic front sight post in favor of a light weight, aluminum Red Lion Precision railed fore-end and a Bushnell TRS-25 red-dot sight.  A Limb-Saver recoil pad has also been added along with a rubber cheek pad on the buffer spring assembly and a 33 rnd factory Glock 9mm magazine.

Below is a closer shot of the fore-end and Bushnell red-dot.

keltec2

Sure looks cool, PP, but hold up a second.  You said that one of the advantages of the Kel-Tec sub 2000 was that it folded in half for storage.  How can you fold your modified Sub 2000 with that red-dot sight sitting on the rail?

Oh, I forgot to mention the best thing about the Red Lion Precision fore-end: it rotates!  In the above picture, note the two knurled rings.  A quick turn of the forward ring loosens the rail and allows the user to rotate it to any number of indexed positions.  Reversing the procedure returns the fore-end to its indexed position and a perfect hold on zero!  Although the picture below is slightly blurry, you can see the fore-end rotated 90 degrees clockwise and locked.  How cool is that?

keltec3

The final pic shows the rotated fore-end, Bushnell still mounted and perfectly zeroed, now folded in half!

keltec4

How awesome is that?

The red Lion Precision fore-end was approx $140 and well worth the money.  I’ll probably add a flip-up front sight for peace of mind in case the Bushnell goes south or runs out of juice.  This carbine now fits in an inconspicuous normal sized laptop case or carry bag.  The mind just boggles at the possibilities.

Be Safe.  Be Prepared.

Generator Test With Stored Gasoline

Took some time off from the “Honey -Do” list today to fire up the Honda eu2000i generator using some gasoline I had stored some 18 months ago. This is a prudent thing to to for a number of reasons. First, it’s hurricane season here in Florida and my neighborhood has those old-fashioned wooden power poles that are Always affected high winds, so the likelihood of my power going out even in winds short of hurricane strength is better than even. Second, having a working generator and bad gas is like having no generator at all. It’s like having a shotgun, but no shells. For the record, the 5 Gallon can of gas I filled and added a fuel stabilizer to, started the Honda on the fifth pull and ran like a champ.
If you’ve got a generator and stored gasoline, why not take a moment to crank it up this weekend? You’ll be glad you did.

Be safe. Be prepared.

Kel-Tec Sub2000 Project – Making a Good Trunk Gun Better

KelTecSub2000About a year ago, I bought a Kel-Tec Sub2000 at a gun show.  The Sub2000 is a light weight, fold-able, pistol caliber carbine.  This particular version utilizes ubiquitous 9mm Glock 17 magazines.  My intent was to use the Kel-Tec as a ‘trunk gun’.  Now, this term has lots of meanings to lots of people, but to me it means a gun I could conceal (legally) in the trunk of a car, or in my case, the rear seat/storage area of my pick-up truck as a back-up weapon to my daily carry should the situation warrant.  If you think this is ‘excessive’ or ‘over the top’ – you’re reading the wrong blog or you’ve never been in a ‘civil disturbance’ ( spelled R-I-O-T).  I live near Miami, FL and have seen several.

At the range, the Sub2000 exhibited reasonable accuracy, but impeccable dependability.  Right out of the box it ate FMJs and JHPs with aplomb and without a jam or misfeed.  It shot about 6 inches right and 3 inches high at 50 yards with the somewhat ‘cheesy’  red plastic vertical bar sight in an equally cheesy plastic ring on the front of the barrel which also serves as a locking device when the carbine is folded in half.  Basically, I like the gun, and having now fired it, thought it could serve the purpose, that of a trunk gun, quite well – if I made a few improvements.

In a post later this week, I will show you the improvements I made to the Kel-Tec.  I think you’re gonna like it!

A Statement of the Obvious – And a Call For Comments

Tattered Flag

Wow.  I’ve found it very hard to simply blog about prepping lately.  This is, of course, not news to the followers of this prepping blog and to you, I can only apologize and offer this meager explanation.

I started this blog as a Prepping blog and, as such, I feel I have achieved some measure of success and am quite happy with the quality and originality of its content.  Writing this blog was my way of sharing my prepping experiences with a growing number of like-minded people who were journeying down the same road of self sufficiency and preparedness.  Except for a few dalliances, I have succeeded in my efforts to avoid being overtly political and overbearingly pessimistic – and therein lies the problem.  In recent weeks and months, whenever I sat down to write about my new Ruger LC9 or the incredible mods I’ve made to my Kel-Tec Sub-2000, I instead,  start writing dire warnings about how the Department of Homeland Security has ordered nearly 2 Billion rounds of small arms ammo in the past year. Why?  Who are they anticipating doing battle with?

Or how that same department has ordered over seven thousand armored, mine-resistant vehicles – not for the Iraq or Afghanistan theater, but for deployment here in the CONUS. Why?

Or how the local police are becoming more and more militarized, through ‘fusion centers’ (Google that one…and YES, the NSA will be watching as you do it) funded by, you guessed it, the DHS.  Why?

Or how a whole panoply of government agencies are capturing everything we write, say, and read from our digital phones and computers and storing it without a warrant (google the PRISM program).  Why?

Or how Free Speech, the bedrock of a free society, is being stifled by political correctness, the US Justice Department, and the IRS.  Why?

Or how we are openly supplying arms to an group of Islamist rebels in Syria who share the same goals as al Qaeda, our alleged sworn enemy.  (Anyone read 1984?)  Why?

Or how the US debt is about to reach $17,000,000,000,000 – a sum that is impossible to pay back.

Or…  Well, you get the picture.  And it’s NOT a rosy one.  I wish I could just ignore all this stuff, but, as preppers, we MUST be aware of these happenings and act in our best interests to shield our families form their possible effects.  We haven’t invested our time and money prepping merely for hurricanes or floods or tornadoes.  We all know that something is going to ‘go-south’ here in America.  We can feel it.  We all dread it and pray that it never occurs, but.  Well…. We know better, don’t we?

I wish I had a more positive, uplifting message, but I don’t.  I heard Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless The USA’ the other day and instead of tears welling up in my eyes as was once the case, I just sadly shook my head when he said:  “I’m proud to live in America, where at least I know I’m free.”  A libertarian, constitution-loving, gun owning, liberty loving Tea-Party Christian, free?  I’m not so sure anymore.

Are you?

Share your thoughts with me and others in comments.  I really want to know how you all feel about what I’ve written here tonight.  Do you agree?  Or do you want me to shut up and post pics of my souped up Kel-Tec Sub2000?

These People Also Thought: ‘It Could NEVER Happen Here.’

People reach out to take fruits and vegetables distributed for free by farmers during a protest against high production costs outside the Agriculture Ministry in Athens

As I see it, the BIGGEST regret most folks will have when the economy house-of-cards comes crashing down is that they did not have an adequate supply of food to get through the period of turmoil and chaos it will leave in its wake.  I’ve been preaching all sorts of prepping for a few years now and many people have responded positively.  For this I am very grateful and heartened.  If, however, you’ve been waiting for the ‘right time’ or that next bonus check to begin your food preps, for Pete’s sake, start it NOW.  Those people in that photograph do not live in a 3rd world country, or one ravaged by a natural disaster or war or famine, they live in Greece.  A modern country.  A member of NATO!  A country, however, ravaged by debt and ‘economic austerity imposed upon it by their European Union overlords.

The Greek Debt to GDP ratio is 160%.  That is to say that they owe 60% more in debt, that their entire economy produces.  Ha ha, what a joke of a country, eh?  Before you snicker too loudly, please realize that the US debt to GDP ratio is about 110%. Yes, that’s right:  We too, owe more in debt than our entire economy produces.  The only thing preventing pictures like the one above from being taken all across this country is the world’s mistaken and misplaced belief that the US dollar has some real value.  The milli-second that some country comes to its senses and proclaims that it no longer has faith in the US dollar – we’re screwed.  Financially, we will have become Greece.  Psssst:  The dirty little secret is that we ALREADY ARE GREECE!  Like I said, all it will take is for some kid in a crowd to proclaim that the ‘Emperor has no Clothes!!!’

To wit, I have recently begun the slow process of ‘upgrading’ my food stores from grocery store canned and packaged food to long-term freeze-dried, dehydrated meals.  This will be a slow process because it is expensive.  But, my foresight in stocking up about a years’ supply of food has bought me time to do the transition at my own pace.  Ideally, I will have a good supply of both types of stores, for variety’s sake.  I hope I have the time to complete the transition.  I’ll keep you posted.  In the mean time, I implore you to stock up on food now.  I have plenty of ideas on the subject in this blog if you’re a first time visitor.  Do not hesitate.  We are Greece/Greece is us.

Be Prepared.

A Sceptical Look at ‘Doomsday Preppers’

DP PM

No doubt about it;  America now knows what ‘Prepping’ is.  Doomsday Preppers (National Geographic Channel) has brought to light the idea that there are many people among us, our neighbors perhaps, that, to varying degrees, are preparing provisions, locations, and self protection schemes in case some calamity befalls their neighborhood/city/state/country.   It has become one of the most popular shows on the above-mentioned cable channel better known for wildlife or space documentaries.

This is a good thing, right?  I mean, anything that shows preppers as just ordinary people can only create converts and grow our ranks.  Well, that would be true if the show did depict preppers as ordinary people.  My problem with the show is that that is not at all what they do.  Let me explain:

What they do mostly is find the most extreme cases of people or families involved in meticulous prepping for some very specific event like the Yelowstone Super Volcano, or an EMP attack, or a worldwide avian flu pandemic, follow them as they toil away trying to protect their families from the calamity, then actually dismiss their whole raison d’etre (reason for being) by showing how ‘experts’ think the possibility of their particular event happening is breathtakingly remote.  What’s the subtle message here?  These people are perhaps harmless, but needlessly obsessed with events are exceedingly unlikely to occur.   Sure, they mean well, they’re just a little misguided.  Innocuous criticism, right?  Well maybe.

But maybe not.

In days with filled supermarket shelves, you are ‘merely’ misguided.  However, in darker days, how long will it be until you (we) are looked down upon as  greedy, or  selfish, or hoarders of the ‘community’s food’?  Think about if for a moment.  If a food shortage does occur, no matter the cause: weather, local rioting, terrorism, a trucking strike, or crop failures, how long will it actually take for your benign little obsession with ‘food hoarding‘ and the ‘2nd Amendment‘ to cause you to be labeled as a ‘threat to the community, or an ‘extremist’ or, (if you’ll forgive the insertion of yet another French term) the coup de grace: a domestic terrorist.

Oh Practical Prepper, you’ve gone over the deep edge, dude.  How can my belief in the sactity of the 2nd Amendment and my having several guns for my protection and that of my family and our food be ‘terrorism?

Exhibit A:  Mock Disaster Training Exercise in Scioto County.  Guess who the bad guys are?  Click the link.  More tonight.  Do you think this exercise and story occurring on the same weekend as Pro 2nd-Amendment rallies are taking place across the country was an accident?  I don’t.

A Call-To-Action from Practical Prepper

Hi, fellow preppers.  I’ve sufficiently recovered from the election to resume posting on this blog again.  But, rather than one loooong pontification about several subjects, I’ve chosen to break my thoughts up into a few brief entries to be published on this site in the coming few days.

This post is time-sensitive, so it’s going first.  Due to the deliberate over-reaction to recent mass-shooting events, our right to Keep and Bear arms, guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution are in grave peril.  Our gun rights are under direct attack from many sides; Statists, protectionists, gun-grabbers,  complicit news media, and others.  Action must be taken NOW to stem this onslaught of anti-gun propaganda.  If this is important to you, then please try to attend a Pro-2nd Amendment ‘Guns Across America‘ rally in your state capital on Saturday, January 19th at noon.  The poster for the nationwide event is posted below.  Here’s the link to the web site.

It’s time to get off the couch and stand up for our God-given rights to protect our families.  I’ll be at the Florida rally.  Look on the Facebook link on the above linked web sire for the location in your state.  Tempus fugit!
